Part 4 - Tools & gear

Something in my opinion that is overstated with outdoor related things is the gear... That is not to say I don't love and have way too much gear, but just saying that as a starting point you do not need to go all out to have an epic experience. Lets get into some of the basics here, this is beginner camping after all ;)

First things first, even if you aren't camping I would advise having a basic good quality pocket knife for any #outdooradventuring, you have no idea how much you will use it. I have used my pocket knives for things you absolutely should not use them for, but in a pinch you might have to. I've opened cans, used them as temporary nails, pulled out splinters... and other hunting purposes too.

I am not a knife collector like my partner here but I have a small rotation for different uses.

One I like as a daily carry option that is small and lightweight while still offering an excellent useful blade is this #Kershaw Mini Iridium at this price it is incredibly difficult to beat considering it comes with D2 steel and is quite a bargain with the other features like the Dura lock, very much like the #benchmade axislock. Honestly I would feel pretty confident saying just grab this and don't look back but I will list a few other options.

My second option is the trust Morakniv Companion fixed blade These are crazy value for money and come lightsaber sharp. You won't feel bad about using them hard at the price point either and they will take whatever you throw at them.

If you want a foldable pocket tank then one of the best choices is the tried and true #ZeroTolerance 0350. This is not a super light weight option, but it could be tied to a stick and used as a spear like you're Arnold in #predator, you can hit it with another block of wood and split wood with it... All kinds of stuff and it will not care. Mine has been used as a hammer, an all in one utensil ( probably don't do that but you know...) it's been run over, fallen down a hillside of massive boulders and a ton more I can't even remember.

Black folding knife with textured handle lies on a wet, moss-covered stone surface. Blade is open. Overcast lighting, muted colors.
my 6+ year old ZT0350 still in excellent condition after many beatings

Next I can advise that you do either want a hatchet or some form of semi compact axe, and there is just nowhere else too look than Fiskars products. I would buy #fiskars brand air if they sold it after the experiences I have had with anything I have tried.

First this splitting axe is more of an all purpose use tool for me while camping, it comes razor sharp and has a great holster with a lock in safety which is actually durable and useful. And to pair with it the fiskars #hookaroon which is an awesome tool for when you feel like you have an 80 year old back and knees like I do. You can use this thing for easy wood gathering and hauling, and to safely hold blocks of wood while you split them. Also a great snake tool if you are unlucky enough to have one invade your camp area.

A campfire with burning logs and bright flames, surrounded by rocks in a forest setting. A fiskars axe and wooden board lie nearby on the ground.
My fiskars stuff finds it's way into about 50% of any camping pics I take for good reason

A final note for now, you will absolutely love and appreciate a sharptooth style saw. These cut faster and better than you think without smashing your hands with an ax. First my favorite smaller fiskars saw these cut through downed trees or branches super easily and efficiently. If you want a more hardcore option also from #fiskars check this option that includes a sheath

More items to come for this and the earlier lists and thanks for the continued interest in this series :) Feel free to ask more questions on our socials, the last few have been very useful for me to see what kinds of questions people have related to gear and more.
